Project Description:
The project involves the replacement of wastewater lines in central South Austin in the East Bouldin Creek Watershed. The project includes installing 1.35 miles of 18-inch and 8-inch gravity wastewater lines. Work is entirely within street right of way, with the exception of staging areas, which were located in City parks. There are two levels of wastewater systems – a new 8-inch that collects local services and is tied into the City’s existing wastewater system. The new 18-inch main is located below the 8-inch and will be put into service once the North Phase of this project is completed. Upon completion, the 8-inch will transfer into the 18-inch. Construction methods include open cut construction and jacking and boring to cross under streets and limit impacts to trees.
This project was technically complex, requiring some lines to be placed in service in a phased sequence based on completion of neighboring portions of the contract. Wastewater lines to be replaced were plagued by significant structural defects, and were repaired as part of the Austin Water Utility’s Austin Clean Water Program. This project is currently in Substantial Completion, to reach Final Completion by June 30, 2009.
