Menger Creek Drainage Improvements | San Antonio, TX

The objective of this project is to confine the 100-year floodplain in the channel, thereby preventing more than 60 properties from flooding. The project encompasses channel improvements from 400-feet east of Walters Street to the termination of the existing channel on the east side of the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) right-of-way. The design included replacing a pedestrian bridge and adding new sidewalks along Grimes Street; replacing a vehicular bridge at N. Rio Grande Street with a single span, 30-foot wide bridge; and upgrading the drainage conditions at the Union Pacific Railroad crossing.

As the prime consultant, the CAS team completed the design of this project. In order to keep flood water in the channel, two 120-inch tunnels were designed with 78-inch carrier pipes on the north side of the existing channel. Our team prepared cost estimates, hydrology and hydraulic models, detailed designs, construction documents, provided utility coordination, design of relocations for the water and sewer lines, prepared and coordinated UPRR permits, Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) permits and inspections, COSA Stormwater Engineering Review, Bexar County Floodplain Review, COSA Tree Preservation, and HEC-RAS models.

In addition, CAS prepared and coordinated construction plans with the San Antonio Water System for the relaying and rehabilitation of 1,459 feet of 8-inch to 24-inch wastewater and 211 feet of 8-inch to 36-inch water infrastructure. CAS also provided construction phase services.
