Huebner Creek Regional Stormwater Facility at Prue Road | San Antonio, TX

This project had an initial goal of adding storm detention storage volume to an existing reach of Huebner Creek, making use of an existing undersized culvert crossing.  There was an existing water feature within the project area, called the “duck pond”, which would need protection during and following construction, to maintain its environmental integrity and status as an asset for the adjacent neighborhoods.  In addition to designing a project which would reduce scouring velocities in the vicinity of the duck pond, an enhancement of the existing wetland areas was designed, doubling the size, while utilizing the existing wetland topsoil, to help retain the local vegetation.  Additional wetland the riparian vegetation was also provided in the project.

As the prime consultant, CAS reviewed prior work and prepared an Updated Evaluation Report. The CAS Team performed a Hydrology and Hydraulics analysis to evaluate the detention pond design, and alternatives for the final regional stormwater facility CAS provided design and construction administration services, as well as support to the Bexar County Program Management team for a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Individual Permit.

Project Cost: $2.6M

Owner: Bexar County

This project was awarded as 2017 Environmental Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association Texas Chapter, and as one of the 2018 Public Works Projects of the Year by the American Public Works Association.
